Timings & Travel

We’ll be meeting at Mary’s Youth Club at 11am on Tuesday 10th August

We’ll then travel to Chigwell Row by train (Underground) and a local bus.

Please bring a packed lunch!

On Friday 14th August, we’ll be back at Mary’s by 4pm.

Cost

We’re asking for a contribution of £75 for this residential which equates to £15 per day. This is a small part of the cost to us of this camp. If you’re eligible for HAF, then this activity comes at no cost to you as it is funded by the Local Authority scheme.

Any payment contribution goes towards the cost of accommodation, travel, and the activities.

If you’re unsure if you need to pay, or you have any issues with payment, please get in touch with us.

If full payment is not possible at the moment, please speak to a member of staff, we never want finance to be a barrier to participation.

The true cost of this activity is £380 per person.

The spaces on Summer Camp are limited and the scope broad as it’s essentially 5 days of 24 hour youth club! Therefore, there’s a higher cost of an unused associated with no-shows.

If you/your young person is unable to attend Summer Camp, we need to know by the morning of the working day before camp (on this occasion, the morning of Friday 7th August.)

Anytime after that and we won’t be able to fill the space with another young person on the waitlist.

If this happens, we will therefore ask that you pay the full £380 cost of the space that will then be unused.

Getting in touch while we're away

We want to encourage young people to bond as a group and limit the time they spend on their phones while we’re away. Parents can help us with this by giving their child a little independence.  No news is good news! Staff will happily give you updates over the phone or by text, just get in touch with the trip lead and we’ll get back to you when convenient.

The Lead for this trip is Jake Williams.

Please use Jordan’s number to contact us. Jordan’s number is: 07816 073 016.

We’ll be posting regular updates on our social media channels, including photos and videos of what we’re getting up to that day.

Follow us @MarysYouthClub on all platforms. Instagram & Snaphat will be updated more regularly than TikTok.

You’re home contact is Sally Baxter, CEO & DSL for Marys Youth Club. If you have concerns or a complaint while the group are away please contact her on 07429 340 579. She will be visiting us on Wednesday 12th so if you have a message to pass on she’s happy to do that.

Kit List

Other Information

First Aid

We have suitably qualified first aiders on all our activities along with appropriate first aid kits. All other medical issues are dealt with by other practices/policies.

Group Ratios

We will be taking 18 young people with four paid members of staff and one volunteer.

Note to Parents & Guardians

Our experience is that parents/guardians will slip their kid a tenner (sometimes a score) for the trip. This automatically becomes a challenge to buy as many sweets and cans of drink as possible. Then, for example, after an activity finishes, they snack on a meal’s worth of food, meanwhile, the ever-present fruit bowl goes untouched. When it’s dinner time, they’re not hungry (having gorged on wagon wheels), and they don’t eat what we’ve prepared, which then gets wasted (we don’t have a large fridge on camp.) At 8pm they get ‘hangry’, and it spoils the mood. But there’s always fruit (& plenty of food & campfire treats)

Alternatively, spend the money on a nice dessert for when they get back, to welcome them home, show how proud you are that they went camping, or to mark the end of a few days of relative peace.

Any money given to young people is their responsibility. Mary’s claims no responsibility for lost money and won’t offer to look after it as we have nowhere secure to keep it. The same applies to their personal property. Rooms can be locked but it will be the responsibility of the young people to lock them.

Behaviour Agreement

Parents and guardians should be aware that as Youth Workers, we do not at any time act in ‘loco parentis’, which means ‘in place of the parents’. Therefore, you and your child should be aware that when taking part in our activities, parents/guardians remain responsible for their child’s safety and wellbeing and are accountable for the actions of their child.

As Youth Workers, we have a duty of care to young people and their families. Duty of Care establishes a legal and ethical responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our members and demands that we act reasonably to uphold this. Consequently, behaviour that threatens to compromise our duty of care is likely to result in young people being prohibited from taking part.

Essentially, it boils down to a matter of trust between all parties involved.

We expect all members at Mary’s Youth Club to be considerate, supportive, responsible and ready to get involved and try new things. This includes when we are in public and with our partner organisations.

We do not accept fighting, bullying, racism, homophobia, sexism or other forms of threatening language or discriminatory behaviour.

If the above conditions are not met members will be asked to leave an activity. If it is impractical for staff to bring a child/young person back to the centre, parents will be contacted and will be expected to make arrangements for the safe return of their child.

If the behaviour of a significant number of children/young people taking part in an activity fall below an acceptable level, we will cancel the activity and notify parents of the change in circumstances.

Where an additional cost is incurred, the parents will be expected to pay this in full. For example: extra travel arrangements, staff time and other costs. Where a member has been banned from a paid for activity or where an activity has been paid for and the child fails to attend on time, no refunds will be issued.

Mary’s Youth Club believes in the principle of appropriate confidentiality between Youth Work Staff and the members they work with. However, the Mary’s Youth Club staff team may contact parents to discuss the behaviour of those children and young people who take part in Youth Services activities if in our opinion the situation warrants it.

If a young person commits a serious crime, we will involve the police and any other relevant agency or authority.

The behaviour agreement applies to all activities; however, each activity may also have its own agreed rules. These will be made clear to any member joining the activity.
