We are super excited to announce that we have been generously gifted stencil posters of Little Simz, from the amazing artist, STEWY.
Each of the posters are signed by STEWY and are for sale in our shop, with all proceeds going back into the youth club.
“I hope the prints help raise some money and highlight the importance of Mary’s within the community”
Little Simz, Stencil art by artist STEWY, located on a wall near Elliotts Place/ Essex Rd
A bit about the artist STEWY
STEWY is a Bristol based stencil artist who creates life sized portraits of people in locations across the UK and the US. But not just any location, STEWY specifically chooses spots that are relevant in some way to the persons story.
“I work as a stencil based street-artist making site specific work, exploring the theme of psycho-geography, featuring life-size manifestations of people and animals, in locations relevant to their stories, connecting the spirit of place and history with shared memory, creating conversation within the local community. I try to do this in an honest and inclusive way, accessible to all.
The portraits often share a connection of being rebels, non-conformists and outsiders, under-represented in mainstream society”
Stewy wrote in an email to the youth club “Little Simz is on a wall near Elliott’s Place/Essex Rd. I’ve had work on the same wall for over 14 years and lived near Newington Green before moving to Bristol several years ago.”
Sally, Mary’s Youth Work Manager and CEO, said she was already familiar with the art work, having herself been part of the Islington community for over 8 years “It is a pretty amazing piece of art, and it feels especially inspiring to be able to experience it in such a direct way”
If you’re in the area, we definitely recommend going to see it for yourself.
“The stencils are viewed in public spaces located near a site of importance connected to the individual, creating important contemporary and historical figures, allowing instant access for the public, which encourages immediate engagement, conversation and debate across a multi- generational and multi-cultural audience” STEWY
